L.A. to Be 1st Major City With Woman Fire Captain

A six-year veteran of the Los Angeles Fire Department is to become the first woman fire captain in any major metropolitan department in the country, Mayor Tom Bradley’s office announced Friday.
Roxanne Bercik will be promoted and presented her captain’s badge by the mayor and Fire Chief Donald Manning during a ceremony in the mayor’s conference room Monday morning. She will be assigned to Fire Station 21 in South-Central Los Angeles, with her first days on duty Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.
