DALY CITY, Calif. — Tiger Woods, 14, of Cypress won two matches Friday and moved into the semifinals of the 1990 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship at Lake Merced Golf and Country Club.
The semifinals and championship rounds are scheduled today.
Other semifinalists are Dennis Hillman, 16, of Rye, N.Y.; Matt Todd, 17, of Visalia, and Adam Thomas, 17, of Baxley, Ga.
Woods defeated Brian Waggoner of Old Hickory, Tenn., 7-and-6, in Friday’s third-round match and Notah Begay of Albuquerque, 3-and-2, in the quarterfinals.
Hillman, who is trying to become the first medalist since Doug Martin in 1984 to win the title, won his matches by scores of 3-and-2, and 4-and-3. Todd’s victories were by margins of 4-and-3, and 3-and-1. And Thomas won by 3-and-2, and 1-up.
“I was surprised to be the medalist, but I’m gaining more confidence as I go along,” said Hillman, who will face Woods in today’s semifinal match.
Thomas celebrated his 17th birthday Friday with his 64-year-old grandfather, Bill Cromer, as his caddie.
