Government-Held Thrifts Lose $3.1 Billion: The first-quarter loss by savings and loans controlled by the government compared to a deficit of $6.4 billion in the previous quarter, the Resolution Trust Corp. said. The 350 thrifts under the government’s conservatorship program reported operating losses of $1.4 billion during the quarter ended March 31, a slight improvement from losses of $1.6 billion the previous three months.
