NAMES IN THE NEWS : Ray Bradbury Park Disputed

WAUKEGAN, Ill. — A descendant of former Mayor John F. Powell, who sold Waukegan a tract of land for $1 so he could have a park named after him, says the city had no business renaming the park after author Ray Bradbury.
John Frew, 25, said his great-great-grandfather sold the 1.6-acre plot to the city in 1891 to be designated permanently as Powell’s Park.
“I would like it to be changed back,” Frew said.
Waukegan recently renamed the tract Ray Bradbury Park to honor the writer who grew up in this city 35 miles north of Chicago. Bradbury, 69, author of such books as “The Martian Chronicles” and “Dandelion Wine,” left Waukegan in 1934.
