Costa Mesa 41, Twentynine Palms 7-- Costa Mesa, 0-10 in 1989, won its opener over visiting Twentynine Palms at Newport Harbor’s Davidson Field.
Junior quarterback Ryan McEvoy completed 14 of 21 passes for 296 yards and four touchdowns in his first full varsity game.
Running back Jermaine Jackson--a second-stringer at Saddleback last year--rushed for 120 yards in 21 carries and two touchdowns for the Mustangs.
Mustang senior Duberney Ospina caught five passes for 143 yards and two TDs, kicked five extra points, and broke up a Twentynine Palms pass in the end zone.
Costa Mesa flanker David Phillips caught four pass, two for touchdowns.
