NEW YORK — Thomas Hearns has broken with his longtime manager and trainer, Emanuel Steward.
Hearns, winner of five titles, said Tuesday he plans to manage himself and take on former promoter Harold Smith of Los Angeles and boxing manager Dennis Rappaport of New York as advisers.
Hearns said he had personal and professional reasons for breaking ties with Steward.
“This is typical of Tommy’s mentality in recent weeks,” Steward said of the break. “It’s good riddance.”
