Michael Andretti, still hoping for a shot at the CART PPG Cup championship, took the provisional pole with a lap of 110.521 m.p.h. in a rain-slowed qualifying session for the Red Roof Inns 200 at Lexington, Ohio.
Emerson Fittipaldi was second at 108.282 m.p.h., followed by Mario Andretti at 107.433 m.p.h.
