Jeff Barrett of Santa Monica City College has been named the Western State Conference offensive player of the week, and John Corcoran of Moorpark has been selected as the co-defensive player of the week.
Barrett, a sophomore quarterback from Burroughs High, completed 17 of 28 passes for 217 yards and two touchdowns in Santa Monica’s 33-16 opening victory over Saddleback on Saturday. He also ran for two touchdowns and 23 yards in nine carries.
Corcoran, a sophomore defensive back from Crespi High, had two interceptions, nine tackles and helped break up four passes in Moorpark’s 38-3 opening victory against East Los Angeles.
Doni Green, a former track coach at Simi Valley High and Cal Lutheran, will coach the Moorpark College men’s and women’s track teams this season.
Manny Trevino, who has coached track and cross-country at Moorpark for 19 years, is taking a one-year sabbatical.
After this season, “I would hope (Green) would be incorporated into our staff,” said Paul Dunham, Moorpark’s athletic director. “I would assume Manny would be back as head coach.”
Tina Garcea, Moorpark’s volleyball coach, will join John Keever, the school’s wrestling coach, as track assistants.
Former track assistant Mike Stewart is coaching the cross-country teams for a season in Trevino’s absence.
