Santa Clarita Council Fires Lobbying Firm

The Santa Clarita City Council has fired a $5,000-a-month lobbying firm it hired last September to represent the city’s interests on several issues, particularly in the debate over the proposed Elsmere Canyon landfill.
The council unanimously voted Tuesday night to dismiss Capital Representation Group, which has offices in Los Angeles, Sacramento and Washington. The council said it will seek out another professional lobbyist.
Councilman Carl Boyer III, who has lobbied for the city in Sacramento and Washington, said council members were disappointed with the lobbyist. The city sometimes obtained information about the Elsmere Canyon dump before the lobbyists did, Boyer complained.
H.B. Sanford, a lobbyist with the firm, said Wednesday that he thought the company had a good relationship with the city and was surprised by the council’s action.
Santa Clarita opposes plans by the county and city of Los Angeles to operate a 190-million-ton garbage dump in Elsmere Canyon, a mile outside the city.
