Checchi Delays Decisions on Northwest : The chairman of Northwest Airlines has delayed a decision about layoffs and service cuts in an effort to consult employees. But Checchi also said the carrier is “rapidly approaching the point where some action that would affect our employees and our customers is essential” to counter rising fuel prices. Checchi refused to comment specifically about layoffs or grounding planes. But the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported that Checchi implied that Northwest is willing to discuss a deal with its unions that would avert layoffs in exchange for pay cuts, work-rule changes or perhaps partial employee ownership.
