THE SIDELINES : 6 Nominees for Owens Award

INDIANAPOLIS — Jackie Joyner-Kersee, the only two-time winner of the Jesse Owens Award, was among six nominees announced today for this year’s award as the nation’s top track and field athlete.

The winner will be announced Nov. 30 in Seattle during the annual convention of The Athletics Congress, the sport’s national governing body.

Joyner-Kersee, 28, the world record-holder in the heptathlon, won the long jump at the U.S. outdoor championships and had the year’s best score in the heptathlon at the Goodwill Games.

Other nominees are Leroy Burrell, who ran the fastest 100 meters of the year; Lynn Jennings, who set world and American records in the indoor 5,000 meters; Dave Johnson, U.S. and Goodwill Games decathlon winner; Michael Johnson, U.S. indoor 400-meters and outdoor 200-meters champion, and PattiSue Plumer, U.S. 5,000-meters champion.
