McDonnell Douglas Layoffs Begin: McDonnell Douglas has begun laying off 1,000 to 1,200 workers at its Long Beach and Torrance aircraft plants, part of a previously disclosed plan to eliminate 8,000 jobs at the two facilities this year. Employment at the two plants stood at 41,000 at the end of September. The company also disclosed plans to eliminate 1,500 jobs through attrition at the two facilities next year.
