Board OKs 6 Year-Round Schools

Glendale’s Board of Education on Tuesday approved a year-round calendar to begin in July, with students attending classes three months on and one month off throughout the year at the district’s six most crowded elementary schools.
The board also authorized the district to spend $1.16 million to install air conditioning at Balboa, Columbus, Jefferson, Keppel, Mann and Marshall elementary schools. Edison and Muir elementary schools are scheduled to go year-round in 1992.
Under the “60-20” schedule, which refers to school rather than calendar days, students at a school will be divided into four tracks. Three tracks will be in school at one time, with the fourth on vacation. That should increase each school’s enrollment capacity by 25%, officials said.
