The Ventura Coalition Against Household Violence will sponsor a conference in Spanish today to inform abused women about community services and to teach them about parenting skills, the cycle of abuse and rape.
The second annual Allianza de Seguridad Para la Mujer conference will be held at the Oxnard Community Center as part of National Domestic and Violence Awareness Month. The presentation will be in Spanish because non-English-speaking women are less aware of available services due to the language barrier, organizers said.
“We want to educate the public that household violence is not just a national problem, but it’s an issue right here at home,” said Jamie Leigh, executive director of the coalition.
The coalition offers a free shelter for battered women and their children, a 24-hour hot line, counseling for victims and the ones who batter them, support groups and community outreach.
