Jack (Pete) Brooks Sr.; Owner of Pioneer Market

Jack (Pete) Douglas Brooks Sr., former operator of Pioneer Market in San Fernando, died Friday in a Granada Hills convalescent home. He was 80.
A Texas native, Brooks came to San Fernando in 1943 and soon afterward bought the Pioneer Market. He operated the neighborhood store until his retirement in the mid-1960s.
He was a longtime member of the San Fernando Elks Club and the San Fernando Kiwanis Club.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Brooks; sons Jack Brooks Jr. of Granada Hills and Danny Brooks of Marysville, Wash.; a daughter, Delores Chatfield of Encinitas; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Visitation is planned from 2 to 9 p.m. Monday at Utter-McKinley Mortuary, 11071 Columbus Ave. in Mission Hills.
A funeral is scheduled at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the same location. Burial will be private.
