El Greco Breaks Records: An oil painting by Spanish master El Greco was sold for $2.96 million at an auction in Madrid, a record price for a work by the Crete-born artist. The painting, held privately for its nearly 400-year existence, was sold to an anonymous buyer bidding by telephone, a Madrid representative for Sotheby’s of London. “The Disrobing of Christ,” which portrays the robed and bound figure of Jesus surrounded by Roman soldiers and onlookers, is a smaller version of a painting of the same name that hangs in the Toledo cathedral.
