NATION : N.Y. Youths Kill Homeless Man

NEW YORK — A gang of youths armed with bats, knives and meat cleavers, some wearing Halloween masks, attacked a shantytown where a group of homeless people lived, killing one man and injuring several others, police said today.
Investigators said they did not know any motive for the attack, in which the dead man’s throat was cut.
The gang, numbering 10 to 12, crossed a footbridge from upper Manhattan to Ward’s Island in the East River late Wednesday and attacked the shantytown in a wooded area.
