COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Mendiola’s Hat Trick Leads Irvine Valley Men Past Golden West

Peiro Mendiola scored three goals to lead Irvine Valley to a 6-1 victory over Golden West Friday in an Orange Empire Conference men’s soccer game at Golden West.

Ryan Tinsley had two goals and Brad Wilson one for Irvine Valley (13-1-5, 8-1-3 in conference).

Ryan Sherry scored for Golden West (7-9-3, 5-4-3).

Aaron Ryan had 10 saves for Irvine Valley, and Chris Lekavich had seven for Golden West.

In another Orange Empire League soccer match:

Cypress 3, Fullerton 0--Charlie Higley, George Charlesworth and Earl Norman scored for host Cypress.

In the South Coast Conference water polo tournament:

Golden West 21, Fullerton 4--Dave Johnson, Edvard Van Luijin and Tory Culbertson scored three goals each for Golden West (25-3) in the semifinal match at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach. Golden West plays in the championship game at 7:30 tonight at Belmont Plaza.

In Orange Empire Conference water polo:

Saddleback 17, Rancho Santiago 13--Bobby Killin’ scored five goals and Jason Armison, Matt Dunbar and Omar Ward three each for Saddleback (9-18, 4-8) in the final game of the year.

In Orange Empire Conference women’s soccer

Palomar 3, Golden West 1--Melanie Midani scored five minutes into the second half for visiting Golden West (7-7-2, 3-3-1) to briefly tie the score. Heather Armstrong, Allison Gibson and Erin Merrifield scored for Palomar.

In Orange Empire Conference women’s volleyball:

Golden West 3, Cypress 0--Brenda Irby had 16 kills and Kysha Green 10 for Golden West (14-1, 9-0) in a 15-2, 15-7, 15-10 victory at Cypress. Kari Calliham had nine kills for Cypress (8-5, 4-5).
