WEINER DOG ART By Gary Larson (Andrews & McMeel: $7.95). The latest collection of “Far Side” cartoons includes work Gary Larson has done since his year-long hiatus, which obviously refreshed his delightfully skewed imagination. His drawings--showing a suburban couple falling victim to “the La Brea Carpets” and the Snake offering Eve the apple with the words, “Well, I’m not sure . . . I guess it’s been washed”--rank with his very best work. In additon to the reprinted newspaper panels, Larson has done a series of “Weiner Dog Paintings,” pastiches that depict dachsunds in various styles, including a hilarious Edvard Munch parody, “The Whine.” Larson’s off-the-wall style of humor often has been copied in recent years, but none of his imitators can match his outre originality: He even makes the Index funny.
