Mexico Factory Pay Among the Lowest

MEXICO CITY — The average factory worker’s salary in Mexico is one of the lowest in the world, ranking below that of Singapore, Hong Kong and South Korea, a ruling party think tank says.
The study, cited by news reports Saturday, says the average wage is $1.57 an hour. It said wages in the Asian manufacturing centers that Mexico regards as its competitors for foreign assembly plants range from $2.70 down to $1.79.
The report was prepared by a committee chaired by one of the Mexican Labor Federation’s top officials, Arturo Romo.
It was highly critical of the government’s anti-inflation program.
