Southern Utah State 35, Cal Lutheran 10--Quarterback Brad Matthews threw for 208 yards to lead Southern Utah State to its seventh consecutive win over the Kingsmen in a nonconference game at Cedar City, Utah.
Southern Utah State, which gained 363 yards, improved to 6-4. For Cal Lutheran (2-7), quarterback Tom Leogrande completed seven of 18 passes for 71 yards and added 92 yards in 24 carries.
Matthews completed 13 of 25, including a 25-yard touchdown toss to flanker Bob Stookey (eight receptions for 120 yards) that gave Southern Utah a 21-0 lead in the second quarter.
Cal Lutheran’s lone touchdown was a three-yard run by Leogrande that cut the Kingsmen’s deficit to 21-7 at halftime. Alex Papike added a 30-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.
Robert Caulfield, a sophomore defensive back from Canyon High, had 12 tackles for CLU.
