Congressional Campaign War Chests

Congratulations on your comprehensive study of campaign spending patterns (“Campaign Cash Takes a Detour,” Column 1, Oct. 28)! For years, legislators have blamed their ever-increasing thirst for political contributions on escalating advertising and postage costs. Your analysis proved that in fact most of their campaign funds are not spent on communicating with voters at all, but on personal and wasteful overhead.
Your study only added more support to your editorial endorsing Prop. 131 in the same edition. In addition to limiting legislators’ terms, Prop. 131 imposes strict campaign contribution and spending limits. Only by restricting how much money politicians can spend will we be able to put a halt to the obscene campaign fund-raising race!
