WORLD : U.S. Planes to Leave Philippines

WASHINGTON — Accepting one of Manila’s major demands, the United States said today that it will withdraw all of its fighter aircraft and 1,800 Air Force personnel from the Philippines next year.
A Pentagon statement said Richard L. Armitage, the presidential special negotiator on U.S. basing arrangements with the Philippines, informed Philippine Foreign Secretary Raul Manglapus of the decision today.
Armitage also told Manglapus that the United States has decided not to station a squadron of new-generation F-15E fighter aircraft at Clark Air Base next year as originally planned. The F-15Es were to replace F-4E aircraft in the 3rd Tactical Fighter Squadron at Clark. The F-15Es will instead be based in Alaska, the announcement said.
