After-School Groups Study All-Year Classes

Glendale Unified School District administrators are expected to meet today with at least 35 community groups to discuss the calendar for year-round education that is to start in July at six elementary schools.

Groups such as the YWCA and Boy Scouts that offer summer and after-school youth activities are seeking to coordinate their programs with the district’s “60-20” schedule, which will keep students in school for three months and off for one month throughout the year, district officials said.

The schedule will begin next year at Balboa, Columbus, Jefferson, Keppel, Mann and Marshall elementary schools. Edison and Muir elementaries are scheduled to go to the year-round schedule in 1992.

Students at each school will be divided into four tracks, with three-fourths of the students in class at one time and one-fourth on vacation. Officials expect the schedule to increase each school’s enrollment capacity by 25%.
