WORLD IN BRIEF : IRELAND : Woman May Win Presidential Vote

Women voters turned out in force for Ireland’s presidential election, boosting left-wing lawyer Mary Robinson’s chances of becoming the first woman to be head of state in Ireland. Robinson was reported running neck and neck with former Cabinet minister Brian Lenihan. Final results are not expected until Friday. The winner is to take up the seven-year post from Patrick Hillery.
