Will Spencer did not start because of disciplinary reasons, but he came off the bench in the second quarter to score five goals and spark Royal High to a 13-4 victory over St. John Bosco on Wednesday in the first round of the Southern Section 3-A Division water polo playoffs at Rancho Pool in Simi Valley.
Trailing, 2-1, after the first quarter, Royal (21-3) scored three times in the second period to take a 4-2 halftime lead.
“We just had to make some adjustments,” Royal Coach Steve Snyder said of the sluggish start. “They came out and pressed us and it took us a while to adjust to it. . . . We were playing without a pulse for the first quarter and a half.”
Leading, 7-4, after the third period, Royal (21-3) scored six unanswered goals in the final quarter. Sophomore Jack Kocur had three goals for Royal, which will play Muir, a 22-10 winner over Arlington, in the second round Friday.
