Cleveland Indian catcher Sandy Alomar Jr. was named American League rookie of the year, becoming only the third major league player to win the award by a unanimous vote since it was established in 1947. The others were Mark McGwire of the Oakland A’s (1987) and Carlton Fisk of the Boston Red Sox (1972).
