What’s in a Name?: Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions, the downtown nonprofit arts space known as LACE, has won an injunction against Lace Fine Arts, a new commercial gallery at 657 La Cienega Blvd., from using the “Lace” name. George Mayers, owner of the new gallery, said he has already decided to change his gallery to George Mayers Fine Arts. According to Mayers, the matter has been settled amicably between the two parties, but Doug Kari, an attorney for the downtown space, said he plans to seek punitive damages and the recovery of all profits made by the commercial gallery while using the name Lace. The downtown space has been using the LACE name since 1977.
