Harcourt Brace Jovanovich Inc.: The Orlando, Fla.-based publishing and insurance firm said it earned $56.9 million in the third quarter, in contrast with last year’s $85.8-million loss, which reflected a $127-million writeoff. Revenue rose to $476.5 million from $470.1 million. The company cited a 5% gain in publishing revenue, which helped offset a 15% drop in its insurance unit, lower interest expense and cost savings.
