TOKYO — The government today approved a series of plane fare increases, including a 5% hike on fares for international flights out of Tokyo and a 7% increase for flights to Tokyo.
The increases, which come in the wake of soaring fuel prices, will be in effect from Dec. 12 through March 31, said Hiroyuki Nakano, a Transport Ministry spokesman.
The cost of a round-trip business-class flight from Tokyo to New York will go up to $3,218 from the current $3,065. A Tokyo-San Francisco round trip will cost $2,375, up $113.
Flights into Tokyo will cost more. The price of a round-trip flight originating in New York will be raised from $2,826 to $3,024; the price for a round-trip ticket to Tokyo from San Francisco or Los Angeles will be $2,330.
