Lutz Tops Fillol, Smith Beats Case in Newport Beach

NEWPORT BEACH — Bob Lutz of San Clemente defeated Jaime Fillol of Alamo, Calif., 6-4, 6-4, in the Grand Champions men’s 35 and older tennis tournament Thursday at the Newport Beach Tennis Club.

In other singles matches, Stan Smith of Hilton Head, S.C., defeated Ross Case of Newport Beach, 6-2, 6-4; Peter Fleming of New York defeated Marty Riessen of Santa Barbara, 6-3, 7-5, and Harold Solomon of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., defeated Bernie Mitton of Newport Beach, 7-5, 6-2.

In doubles, Case and Fillol defeated Solomon and Mitton, 6-1, 6-0, and Smith and Lutz defeated Alvin Gardner and Dick Miller of Newport Beach, 6-2, 6-3.
