WASHINGTON — The U.S. aircraft carriers America, Ranger and Theodore Roosevelt will be sent to the Persian Gulf region to join three other American Navy carriers already there, the Pentagon said Friday.
President Bush on Thursday ordered a major increase in U.S. forces in the tense region around Iraq, including addition of the three carriers. The six floating airfields each carry up to 80 warplanes.
The Navy did not say when the carriers would go to the region, although at least two are expected to be there before Christmas.
