Black Bear Didn’t Deserve This Fate
One of the most magnificent black bears in California survived for 20 years in our wilderness before being cornered by dogs (Newswire, Oct. 30) and having his head blown off by a .357 magnum, fired at a distance of 35 feet by a 15-year-old “sportsman.” Now, instead of being a spectacular member of California’s precious wildlife community, this animal is somebody’s trophy, distinguished as the largest black bear ever shot to death in our state.
Irrevocably, the big bear is dead. No hiker, no photographer, no nature lover will ever again see its dark mass scampering through the forest. Is the world a better place?
