GARDEN GROVE — La Quinta High School wrapped up its first Garden Grove League football championship since 1985 and an undefeated regular season with a 30-0 victory over Los Amigos Friday night at Garden Grove High School.
The loss ended the 16-year varsity coaching career of Art Michalik, who is retiring with a 81-72-3 record compiled at La Quinta, Pacifica and Los Amigos. Michalik was 30-43-2 in seven seasons at Los Amigos and guided the Lobos into the CIF playoffs in 1984, ‘85, ’86 and ’88.
Michalik will be succeeded by assistant Steve Bolton next season.
La Quinta (10-0, 7-0), leading 6-0 in the third quarter, ensured the victory with three touchdown passes from quarterback Don Hopkins. Hopkins hit George Sanchez and Walter Dawkins with 27- and 19-yard scoring passes, respectively, for a 20-0 lead with 4:58 left in the quarter.
Hopkins intercepted a Los Amigos (3-7, 1-6) pass on the next possession and, two plays later, hit tight end Justin Sogoian with a 22-yard touchdown pass. Hopkins completed nine of 14 attempts for 179 yards and three touchdowns.
