MARTIN SCORSESE’S OBSESSION

Oh, wonderful. This great new film starts with “a giddily shocking bit of brutality” and a voice-over intoning, “As far back as I can remember, I’ve always wanted to be a gangster.”
Then we get to hear how eye-twinkling excited the director of this sophisticated bit of high art gets when he contemplates his all-time favorite movie opening--which consists, in essence, of as spot of gender-confused, S&M-tinged; violence set to a cheesy ‘50s B-film jazz score.
Says the director: “You know, I don’t even want to begin to question what that might be all about.”
Good idea, Mr. Scorsese. You might not like the answer all that much.
