King’s 38 Propel Bullets Past Nets, 97-92

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Bernard King scored half of his 38 points during the third quarter and led the Washington Bullets to a 97-92 victory over the New Jersey Nets Monday night.
King made eight of 10 shots and three of four free throws in the third quarter for Washington, which turned a 53-53 halftime tie into an 81-72 lead.
Trailing 92-83 with four minutes to play, New Jersey scored seven consecutive points from the free-throw line, pulling to 92-90 with 1:05 left on two free throws by Derrick Coleman.
King missed an off-balance shot in the lane, but Harvey Grant scored off the rebound with 36 seconds to play, giving Washington a 94-90 lead.
Derrick Gervin then missed a baseline jumper on New Jersey’s next possession and Pervis Ellison blocked two shots by Coleman.
