From Either Side of the Aisle, Prop. 140 Stands for Profound Change : OTHER COMMENTARY : Fresh, Able Faces Will Rattle Cages

If I were still in the Legislature, I’m sure I would have pushed for an initiative on term limits. . . .
While ideally I would have supported eight years for Assembly members and eight years for senators rather than (Proposition 140’s) six and eight, I still think that the opportunity for new people to come on board is great because, frankly, incumbents have the upper hand; in the long run it gives us positive new leadership in the Legislature.
It will also encourage people who are successful in business or other ventures--judge or doctors or anything else--to say, “Yes, I can take six years out of my profession to work for the benefit of the people of California, to bring about some public-policy change, and not become indebted, not have to buy my way through life to stay in office.”
