Lockheed Consolidates in Sunnyvale: Lockheed Missiles & Space Co. will eliminate its astronautics division and merge its operations into the missile systems and space systems units. The company said it expects an undetermined number of layoffs as a result. Work on the Strategic Defense Initiative and National Aeronautics and Space Administration space flights will be transferred to the space division; defensive missile systems and support systems projects will be shifted to the missile division. Together the three divisions employ about 18,600.
