TOKYO — Shouting slogans and waving banners, 4,000 farmers and consumers marched through Tokyo today to demand the government keep Japan’s rice market closed.
Chanting “No open rice market!” and “No concessions to GATT!,” the procession threaded its way through busy downtown streets led by a man on a blue tractor.
Opening Japan to foreign rice is one of the main issues likely to be discussed at the final session of the Uruguay Round of global trade talks under the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, scheduled for Dec. 3-7 in Brussels.
