Boaters, fishermen and others who live or work on the coast should be alert during December because ocean tides will be unusually high, scientists warn. “High tides could pose problems for the shoreline if there are simultaneously occurring storms and high waves,” the Scripps Institution of Oceanography said in a statement. The highest tides of the 1990 winter season will happen the mornings of Dec. 2, 3 and 31, said Daniel R. Cayan, a Scripps meteorology expert, and Reinhard E. Flick, an oceanographer with Scripps and the California Department of Boating and Waterways.
