World IN BRIEF : GERMANY : Soviets Confirm 84 Soldier Deaths

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The commander of Soviet forces in Germany said 84 of his soldiers had deserted and an equal number had died in eastern Germany this year, mainly in accidents or during training. But the commander, Gen. Boris Snetkov, dismissed reports that hundreds more soldiers had died in former East Germany under mysterious circumstances. Snetkov told reporters it will be virtually impossible to withdraw all his 380,000 troops before 1994--the date set by treaty with Germany.
