Nation IN BRIEF : NATIONWIDE : New Device to Test Arteries Developed

Computer-enhanced X-rays show promise in detecting coronary artery disease in people under 60 without requiring the insertion of tubes or other equipment into the body. A technique called ultrafast computed tomography detects calcium in arteries. It could replace the angiogram, which requires that an artery, usually in the groin, be punctured and a tube threaded up into the chest arteries that feed the heart. Dr. Jerome Breen of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., presented the new technique during a radiologists’ convention in Chicago.
