MEXICO CITY — A bridge collapsed during its inauguration ceremony in the state of Veracruz and injured 15 people, including a town mayor who was praising the structure when it fell and dumped him on a river bank, officials said today.
The mayor, the deputy attorney general of Veracruz, and other state and municipal officials fell about 10 feet onto the river bank, government spokesman Tomaso Najera said. He said a total of 15 people were injured in the collapse Monday.
“Most fell onto the river bank and a few fell into the river,” Najera said. “But none were seriously wounded and all are out of hospital.”
