SAN SALVADOR — Leftist rebels attacked a prison on the outskirts of San Salvador late Tuesday, killing at least four people and wounding seven, the military said Wednesday.
Guerrillas of the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN) attacked the Mariona jail in the northern suburb of Mejicanos shortly before midnight, and fighting raged for at least three hours, residents and military spokesmen said.
Two government troops, one inmate and one prison guard died in the attack, while three soldiers and four guards were wounded, the armed forces said.
About 140 people have died and more than 300 have been wounded since the FMLN launched a nationwide wave of attacks last week in a bid to force concessions from the U.S.-backed government in peace talks.
