SANTA ANA : Community College Paper Wins Honors

Rancho Santiago College’s student newspaper and magazine won multiple honors at the Journalism Assn. of Community Colleges annual conference.
For the sixth consecutive year, the school newspaper El Don earned a first place award for general excellence for large-college, tabloid-size newspapers at the regional competition judged by print media professionals.
The publication also placed first for front page layout for the sixth time in a row and received honorable mentions in the headline writing and feature photography categories.
The school magazine, West 17th, swept the competition’s human interest feature writing category, placed first in essay writing and third in layout, and received an honorable mention for illustration.
Students who earned individual awards include Dave Stern for a feature photo, David Sharpness for a humor essay, Daniella Walsh for an illustration and Loyd Atwood, Connie Stanyer and Tanya Tratensek for a human interest feature.
