Akers Resigns as Purdue Coach

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue football Coach Fred Akers, who did not have a winning season in four years with the Boilermakers, resigned Thursday.
Purdue Athletic Director George King cited declining attendance and player discipline as the reasons for a coaching change.
“The things that were a concern to our administration were things that I didn’t feel I could do a great deal about,” said Akers, who added that he was not forced to resign.
Purdue was 2-9 this season, the first time the Boilermakers lost nine games in a season. Akers had a 12-31-1 record in four years, 9-23 in the Big Ten Conference.
King said the remaining four years of Akers’ contract would be bought out. He reportedly was making $125,000 a year.
