Bush Congratulates Walesa on Election

WASHINGTON — sident Bush has written a letter to Lech Walesa to congratulate him on his election as president of Poland, the White House said today.
“The President noted that this electoral process was an important affirmation of the strengthening of democracy and freedom in Poland,” presidential spokesman Marlin Fitzwater said.
“He congratulated Mr. Walesa on his leadership and courage, which has been displayed over many years. The President assured him that the United States stands by Poland and we’ll do all we can to support this new democracy,” Fitzwater said.
