Corona del Mar’s Carlsen All-American in Volleyball

Lara Carlsen of Corona del Mar High School, The Times’ Orange County girls’ volleyball player of the year, has been named to Volleyball Monthly magazine’s All-American first team, the magazine announced Thursday.
Carlsen, a 5-foot-11 senior middle blocker, averaged 14 kills a match and led the Sea Kings to the State Division I and Southern Section 5-A championships. She has made an oral commitment to play at USC next season.

Volleyball team--Wendy Herb of Rosary High School was omitted from Thursday’s listing of the All-Southern Section Division 5-A girls’ volleyball second team in The Times Orange County edition. Also omitted was Valencia’s Amy Tamblyn, who was on the second team in Division 2-A.
La Habra’s Missy Clements, a 5-11 senior middle blocker, was named to the magazine’s All-American second team. Clements, who is undecided on a college, led the Highlanders to their second consecutive State Division II and Southern Section 3-A titles this season.
Carlsen and Clements also were among several Orange County players named to the all-Southern Section teams, which were released Thursday.
County players on the all-Southern Section teams:
Division 5-A
First team: MVPs--Carlsen (Corona del Mar) and Tracy Schriber (Corona del Mar). Others--Marta Bickert (El Toro), Kealy Clarke (Laguna Beach), Tara Kroesch (Newport Harbor), Michelle Mauney (El Toro), Tanya Mitchell (Capistrano Valley), Prentice Perkins (Corona del Mar).
Second team: Brandi Brooks (Estancia), Christine Garner (Tustin), Bryn Gillis (Dana Hills), Judy Jackson (Capistrano Valley), Megan Morse (Santa Margarita), Stacy Petersen (Corona del Mar), Ashley Wacholder (Laguna Beach).
Division 4-A
First team: Cristin Rossman (Marina).
Second team: Stacey Blackburn (Marina), Julie Greer (Esperanza), Debbie Howard (Edison), Heather Lowe (Cypress), Shelby Snyder (Fountain Valley).
Division 3-A
First team: MVP--Clements (La Habra). Others--Melizza Benitez (El Modena), Marni Hichborn (El Modena), Ana Kristich (La Habra), Zrinka Kristich (La Habra).
Second team: Lisa Almanza (La Habra), Kathy Farina (El Modena), Kori Rosenkranz (Sunny Hills).
Division 1-A
First team: Kathleen Bunce (Capistrano Valley Christian), Karen Benkovsky (Capistrano Valley Christian).
Second team: Elaine Kollias (Capistrano Valley Christian), Jennifer Rudometkin (Whittier Christian).
Small Schools Division
First team: Susan Teitsworth (St. Margaret’s).
