THE SIDELINES : Ronnie Lott May Need Surgery

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — San Francisco 49er safety Ronnie Lott may need surgery on one of his sprained knees, Coach George Seifert said.
But immediate surgery is only a possibility, not a probability, Seifert said.
“It’s up in the air right now,” Seifert said Thursday. “I would say it’s week-to-week as to what’s going to take place.”
Lott sprained both knees in the Dec. 3 game against the New York Giants, hurting the left more seriously than the right. He did not play against Cincinnati and on Thursday was listed as doubtful for Monday’s game against the Rams.
He had a magnetic resonance imaging test this week to find out the extent of the damage. Seifert would not discuss the results but said Lott is seeking a second opinion from a doctor of his own choosing.
