Nation : Boy, 2, Killed by Falling Barbell

HARTFORD, Conn. — A 2-year-old boy was killed when he pulled a barbell onto himself from a weightlifting bench near his bed, police said.

Warren St. Omer was pronounced dead after being rushed to St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center on Sunday night, Sgt. Richard Borofsky said.

The boy had apparently reached up from his bed and grabbed the barbell, which extended over his bed from the weightlifting bench, police said.

The barbell, which had about 110 pounds of weights on it, fell on the boy’s throat and suffocated him, police said. The death has been ruled an accident.
